Club History
Almost seventy years ago, Mr. Gerry Thain founded and became the head coach of Camp Hill Edwardians Swimming Club.
As a coach, he rose to the top of the swimming world, serving as a Great Britain team manager at World and European Championships and at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Over his long career, he coached many Olympic and Commonwealth swimmers, earning widespread respect and admiration.

In recognition of his dedication to the sport, Mr. Thain received an MBE in 2003 from Queen Elizabeth II and, in 2008, won the BBC Midlands Sports Unsung Hero Award for his 50 years of service to Camp Hill Edwardians.
Following his passing in 2013, the club divided into two branches: Camp Hill, focusing on age-group swimmers, and the Edwardians Masters. Both clubs remain deeply influenced by Mr. Thain’s legacy and values.
Mr. Thain firmly believed that swimming was for all and for life. He welcomed everyone into his swimming family — a spirit that continues to define our club today. The family feel, supportive atmosphere, and focus on enjoyment and inclusion are the heart of what makes Camp Hill so special. No matter your age, ability, or stage on your swimming journey, your teammates are always there to cheer you on.
Thanks to the vision and passion of Mr. Thain, our club continues to thrive — a proud community built on friendship, encouragement, and a love of swimming.
